Aum vs apeMatrix

Disclaimer: I'm barely able to keep up with all the recent evolutions of hosting/routing auv3 FX, instruments, audio, and MIDI. Some approaches have come & gone, and it appears that Audiobus and Aum have persevered as ways of moving that data between apps/plugs.

As I understand it both AUM and apeMatrix perform similar functions but in different ways. I've not hunkered down with any of Daveypoo's vids, or any explainers about either apps.

I'm just curious with the latest updates if there are a list of standout differences between them both in terms of features/capabilities and in terms of workflow/concept.

If my goal is to be able to take a few instruments, a few FX, and a few generators (drum machine or sequencer) and bring them into one host, I wonder which of Aum or apeMatrix provides the best features for live playing (as opposed to recording).

Personal opinion, I find AUM easier to use when needing to do things quickly, but that does not mean that it is for all and in all situations. So, maybe it may help if I just list a few things that might be better one way or the other in my opinion.

1. I find the mixer sliders of AUM easier to manipulate quickly than the level circles of Ape.

2. I find the visual indications of routings (audio and midi) easier in AUM.

3. I find using the built in LFOs of Ape much quicker to modulate parameters than the system in AUM.

4. The built in keyboard is much more comprehensive in Ape than AUM.

5. The Ape concept of three matrix’s is great but limited with only three.

6. AUM is much better for recording individual channels and making quick loops.

7. Ape is easier in some ways to set up more complex multi route audio set ups, but both have a lot of options.

8. I consider both to be apps that I wouldn’t do without, but if using live or jamming, AUM just feels like it fits many of the usual roles better but only in my opinion and I’m sure some may disagree.

Hope this helps a little.

Hey @Fruitbat1919

Thanks so much for taking the time and your thoughtful response.

That all makes perfect sense. And it also shows why there's not necessarily a simple answer.

AUM does have a nice, elegant GUI, and I suppose it's quite intuitive, while ApeMatrix has some special capabilities not found in AUM.

Since I have both, it's not a need for "pre-purchase" info, it's more just thinking about which one to invest the learning time with.

Again, thanks for that info.
