Sid Tracker 64 Preview

Sid Tracker 64 for iPad is an upcoming all-in-one chiptune studio! This looks like it is going to be big! Beyond emulating the iconic Commodore 64 sounds they've crammed a lot of features into this one, including Inter-App Audio and Audiobus. It was submitted yesterday to Apple for approval, so we should see this on the App Store soon!

There a couple of excellent videos for this, like an 8-bit remix of David Hasselhoff's True Survivor from the Kung Fury soundtrack. If you haven't seen Kung Fury yet, you should do so this weekend. It's only 30 minutes long and free.

Embedded here is the official preview video for Sid Tracker 64.

Buy SidTracker64 on iTunes: $12.99

If you get this app, then get bit by a cobra while watching Kung Fury, you may go back in time...

Look, I love a tracker more than most of you here, but there's nothing I can do here I can't do faster and with more options in Sunvox. Sorry.

Alex wins. Always, it seems.

A portable SID chip emulator & tracker, this is what an iPad was created for! :) I couldn't get into SIDPAD, but this looks like the one I've been waiting for.

odoyle, Sunvox is brilliant at what it does (and can certainly do a good job of emulating that C64 sound), but it's not a dedicated SID emulator and doesn't have its limitations (for instance, forcing you to use three channels). If you truly want to re-capture the SID sound you need these limitations as they make you think about how to make your sound bigger - you can't just slap a chorus or delay on it.

One trademark C64 sound that SidTracker 64 should be able to do with far more ease than SunVox is a delayed vibrato, as it has a dedicated dial for it. There are workarounds to do this discussed on the SunVox forum but they're fiddly to say the least (I did mail Alex a couple of months ago with a request for adding a dedicated vibrato delay - as always he was extremely helpful and suggested this would appear in a future update).

Dru - ooo, I forgot the delayed vibrato. It can be done, but it's a lot more steps than it needs to be.

Good to hear Alex is on it. Our Russian juggernaut :D

BTW, you want limitations? Say hello to Vividtracker. Mmmm, relive the Protracker glory days!

odoyle - I saw Vividtracker a while back, but decided against buying it - I'm not sure I want to re-live the Protracker days! I did love it for a while when I switched from the C64 to the Amiga in the early '90s, but the novelty of samples eventually wore-off and I missed the synth-tweaking of the SID.

What no other iPad music app except SidTracker 64 is capable of: You can export your song to a .sid or .prg and listen to it on an actual C64 (or a C64 emulator, if you like or lack a transfer possibility! ;-)
