ToneWood-Amp

One of the most common criticisms about the site is that it is too synth-focused, at the expense of everything else. Well fuck that. I just scooped every guitar site out there!

ToneWood-Amp is a new amplifier for acoustic guitars, designed to extend the range of sounds produced by the body. Now the acoustic can reproduce lush reverb, and even distortion, by playing the sounds through the hollow body itself. Best of all, the device works as an iOS compatible audio interface!

They are accepting pre-orders now at a discount of just $90!

Here Pete Pancrazi plays out some amazing sounds through his guitar with the aid of the ToneWood-Amp and an iPad. You can tell he's having a ton of fun with this one!

Video Description:

Here are 5 examples played by Pete Pancrazi using the #ToneWoodAmp, showing how versatile an acoustic guitar can be without an amp! Listen to the sound of the ToneWood-Amp built in effects, ToneWood-Amp with iPhone/iPad using the AmpliTube guitar app, ToneWood-Amp with iPhone/iPad using the MIDI Guitar and ThumbJam app playing virtual MIDI instrument, while all sounds coming from the hole of the acoustic guitar itself!

Forgot all about that song, "I am Calling You" (featured in Bagdad Cafe). It's a beauty. Listening to it now.

This looks neat, but I found the string noise and body knocks on the first couple of examples really distracting.

Is it for normal acoustic guitars (without any microphone, only wood) or only for electro-acoustic guitars only (with connectivity) ?

Seems like you must have a magnetic pickup and steel strings.. a piezo transducer pickup would likely create crazy feedback!

You don't need any type of pickup, that's the whole point. (Well, this device IS a pickup, but other than it, you don't)

It looks to me like there is a conventional magnetic pickup for the strings (the figure shows a cable plugged in where you'd normally plug in with an electro-acoustic) -- but then the signal from that is being routed into a box that is then driving a mechanical vibration of the guitar sound chamber. They don't have much detail -- but I'd guess that they're expecting you to put your iPhone inside of the box ($90 for a circuit board with a DSP is not easy to do -- it's hard to do a decent audio interface for $90...). The video shows him using MIDI Guitar and ThumbJam, so there's got to be an iOS device in the chain somewhere.

It looks pretty neat, though, and for $90, is way the heck cheaper than the Vo guitar....

I thought maybe that cable ends at the sensor and attaches to the strap peg? I dunno, but if those drawings are accurate, it just stops there. There doesn't look to be any pickup under the strings. I'd just assumed it gets everything through vibrations of the body.

Hil, I wanted to shed some light on the questions above. Yes, in order to use the ToneWoodAmp you do need some sort of a pickup. Magnetic pickup is preferred but under saddle piezo works as well (that includes nylon string guitars as well). For those of you who don't own an electric-acoustic guitar, we will offer a package of the device plus a "technician free" easy to install high quality magnetic pickup.

Regarding the device sound capabilities: The ToneWoodAmp has a built-in DSP capable to deliver high quality reverb, delay, echo, tremolo and more effects (the DSP final programming is not complete yet). In addition to the internal DSP, the ToneWoodAmp provides access to iDevices allowing you to use any Guitar FX app (such as AmpliTube etc) and MIDI apps (Such as MIDI Guitar and ThumbJam -- as you can see in the above video).

Please note, the iDevice is connected to the ToneWoodAmp from the outside, there is no need to insert it into the guitar as someone might have suggested above.

(For more videos, please visit our website /www.tonewoodamp.com or Facebook page /www.facebook.com/tonewoodamp to see videos from the recent Summer NAMM (Great Nashville musicians tested the device including Grammy Award winner producer Larry Mitchell).

Regarding the price: We offer now an early-bird pre-order registration for a half-off price of $90. We collect no money at this stage, just your email address so you will receive an early notification when the pre-sale starts.

If you have more questions for us please send us a word via Facebook or write to support-AT-tonewoodamp.com... we will have a better support system + FAQ very soon.

Lastly: Thank you so much Tim for the post, it was a pleasant surprise.

Thanks for clearing all that up- I'd really encourage you to put info like that on your website also. I was thinking of preordering one and nowhere did it explain that it didn't work with any acoustic guitar.

Thank you so much Zymos for the feedback. We are working on it and hope to have it on our Facebook and website in a matter of few days. I'll update this page when the new information is available.
