Echo Pad Updated for Aubiobus Effect Slot!

Holderness Media has now updated Echo Pad to be used as an Audiobus Effect! This is something I know a lot of people have been waiting for, myself included! Here is a demo of it with Animoog, a great example since that is such a harmonically rich synth.

Am i the only one here that hates this app design?

Do you mean visually? I agree it's not pretty to look at, but it sounds pretty fantastic.

January 04, 2013  | person_outline Rentson

It's huge!

PS: not the design, the update ;-)

January 04, 2013  | person_outline J.C

it may just be me then, but i don't like anything about the interface. the list is too long to go on about.

January 04, 2013  | person_outline Anonymouse

I agree with you anonymouse, I'm ashamed to say it's actually put me off trying the app but I think the video has got my interest now..

I can't comment about usability but changing the background image / colour scheme would improve things tons. blue red and black doesn't do it for me!

January 04, 2013  | person_outline RMG

same here...
the choice of font and the styling of the buttons/layouts reminds me of my ...um..windows 3.1 days :-)...so kind of delaying the purchase of this ..
it does sound awesome and I think should easily be xpanded into a more professional delay and reverb fx box modeling all the hardware boxes..
something like this would be cool for live fx for guitars too.
I hope it gets a good skin and ux revamp

Nearly busted a gut when I checked my updates, and there were 4 apps with Audiobus compatability; I was tempted to do a little dance!
Totally agree with the other comments regarding the design and layout, but it's still super nice to be able to plop it in the effects slot now.

I'm also talking about functionality too. I don't find it very intuitive.

Hi, Echo Pad developer here. I am always looking to improve the UI of Echo Pad, and have been working on improvements since the 1.0 release in November as per user suggestion. I'm listening to user feedback on the color scheme and fonts, and these will be revamped soon. :-)

Please understand that I don't want to go the copycat route though, and simply rip Korg's Kaoss pad design and layout, I just wouldn't feel right doing that. I would love to hear specific user suggestions for the UI and skin, if you have a minute or two you can submit feature requests using the form here. http://www.holdernessmedia.com/home/ios-applications/music/echo-pad/echo-pad-support

I didn't want to get too negative. Thanks Holderness, i'll fill that out with some thoughts when i have some time tomorrow. 'hate' was a strong word i used. there are some things i like and every app out there has some room for improvement. Good to know you're listening.

January 04, 2013  | person_outline Anonymouse

No worries, user feedback is welcome. :)

props for thick skin!

I can kinda understand what people are on about design wise but my two cents are: the script logo font and background are great. It's the white text on default black iOS buttons that sell the app short a bit visually. Putting the same level of attention there as the incredible looking turntables will go a long way to upping the sex appeal.

What the fuck ever though - the delay sounds incredible. Thanks for getting it in the effects slot!

For what it's worth, with loopy on the bus my real world use case for echopad will be 90% delicious delay in the effects slot and occasionally futzing around with grabbing tiny noisy loops via the turntables. Although it's quite fun to play around with the XY screen I'd love to see some tempo synced delays with beat resolution buttons (1/4, 1/8, dotted...). Or perphaps a mode where the XY screen had vertical slices to snap to those tempo synced resolutions.

Again, whatever. Thanks a lot for Echopad. It's a lot less noisy than my space echo!

January 05, 2013  | person_outline Will

Thanks Will. I agree on the buttons, those are first on the chopping block, haha!

You can do BPM synced delays with Echo Pad by turning on "BPM Sync", which is in the lower right hand corner on the iPad.
To set the tempo you can either use Tap Tempo, or type in a value. This video demonstrates the BPM sync, although the location of the buttons are different in version 1.2. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y0NyrHVQMvU

MIDI clock sync is on the roadmap for Echo Pad, and should come in the next 1-2 updates.

January 05, 2013  | person_outline HoldernessMedia

Ah! Thanks a lot. I thought I had messed with that and it was related to the looper only.

January 05, 2013  | person_outline Will

Been testing this app out for a while in anticipation of it landing in the Audiobus Effects slot. I can't wait to hook this up to Animoog and Nodebeats at the same time to get some sick synchronized echoes. I will agree that the interface isn't as pretty as it could be (my vote? Take a look at the minimalist stylings of the new The Hundreds app . . . Or my own fave for crisp visualization, Tachyon), but really, this is an audio app -- ultimately, what matters is how well it wonks my sounds around. The interface won't matter as much since this'll live in the Effects slot while apps like Magellan provide the input. I would sooner ask for some more applicable effects, like a flange / tremolo set, to expand upon the core functionality.

Whichever direction this goes next, though, thank you for the groovy sounds :-)

January 05, 2013  | person_outline cXeGG

Thanks cXeGG. I've definitely heard it loud and clear that people hate the look of the buttons in Echo Pad, not sexy enough, haha!

I'll be working on adding and improving features/effects as well as updating the look. I agree with you that for audio apps or hardware, the actual sound is infinitely more important than look, but I accept now that for iOS it's simply not how the majority of users feel. The look is what seems to be the true major selling point for most apps, regardless of what genre it is. If people despise the look of those buttons as much as it seems, then I'm losing sales because they won't even try the app! I accept this as a challenge to push myself further.

Up to this point with Echo Pad I've been too single minded, focus has been all about the sound, but the users have spoken, it's clear I need to step up the sex factor! So stay tuned...(in best valley girl voice) "Makeover!!!"

January 05, 2013  | person_outline HoldernessMedia

Well, if it's "sex factor" that yah need for the background and icons, I'm sure I and the other Discchord users would be happy to donate pictures of our schmexy selves to a worthwhile cause :-)

January 05, 2013  | person_outline cXeGG

Woah! We should do a sexy 2013 calendar: for readers, by readers!

Why didn't I think of this sooner? Hurry up guys we've got to get this to print before the end of the month!

*hums "Sexy and I Know It" while my wife cringes*

Anywho, before I hijack the topic and shame everyone with my bod, should mention that what the Echo Pad really makes me long for is for Ampkit+ to hop in the Audiobus. Being able to mod the delay on my guitar in real time with that much precision . . . It sends shivers up my spine.

January 05, 2013  | person_outline cXeGG

This is exactly what the world needs, a calendar of iOS audio nerds with their beloved iDevices and a come hither stare. ;-)

January 05, 2013  | person_outline HoldernessMedia

Nobody needs those images. Ever. Really ever.

It's like anti porn.

January 05, 2013  | person_outline ISM

Wiggle wiggle wiggle..

January 05, 2013  | person_outline Fessaboy/Secret Base Design

Fine, I'll go first. http://kingstonherald.com/graphics/201009/im-on-a-horse.jpg

January 05, 2013  | person_outline Will

Hey Tim, I think I've found our January contest :-)

Happy Nude Year everybody!

January 05, 2013  | person_outline cXeGG

If that is what iOS nerd beef looks like Will, there is no problem. It will be a national best seller, just after cats doing house work and whatever god awful boy band of the day release. :)

January 05, 2013  | person_outline ISM

Echo Pad 1.3 update is out, new color scheme and some UI tweaks, plus 3 new effects. Thanks for the great input and feedback from everyone who contacted me.

January 19, 2013  | person_outline HoldernessMedia

I like the new design, much simple and clear. It´s great to see a developper beeing so responsive!

January 19, 2013  | person_outline Gatan

Agreed. Although now I'd like the option to inject my sexy self in as the background. Just cuz.

Seriously, thanks for the update, Holderness!

January 20, 2013  | person_outline cXeGG

Thanks for the support. :-) This conversation proved to be quite helpful!
