meta DJ Updated with Recording

One of the more impressive looking iOS DJ apps, meta DJ, has now been updated to include support for recording performances. I've never actually played with this and have heard some mixed reviews from users. It seems to be very polarizing with some people loving it and others hating, but I don't want to repeat hearsay so I won't go into the details either way. Instead here is the official word on the patch:

  • Recording
  • Riser synth for creating risers using noise and tones with filtering and modulation.
  • Posting mixes via email and SoundCloud

Physynth Updated with Retina and New Drum Kit!

The highly experimental Physynth app has received it's second major update, including Retina Display support and a free drum kit addition. I was playing with the new "Circuit" kit this morning, and it has a good gritty-circuit-sound, while not being too messy or distorted. It is so nice to see them continue to support this app with free updates; considering they are only charging $3 for the app.

I don't have an iPad 3 so I can't comment on how good the Retina resolution looks, but this is one of the prettiest musical apps out there. It is actually built on a game engine, and has all kinds of cool little pseudo-3D stuff going on, so I imagine it ought to look spectacular.

I've embedded my review here, though I think I should mention some people have disagreed with me strongly on it. It is experimental, so it isn't for everyone, but I like the order than can be brought to the chaos of physics.

bleep!BOX Updated with Retina for iPad

Yet another update for bleep!BOX, this time with support for Retina Display on the new iPad 3ish. White Noise Audio sent a couple of screen shots over! Click the thumb-nails and then go buy a new monitor to appreciate just how much retina displays really display!

Audiobus alpha demo video!

Audiobus is an exciting new app/protocol for routing audio between apps and devices. This is a collaboration between Loopy developer, A Tasty Pixel, and SoundPrism Pro developer, Audanika. A lot of people are very excited for this and around 200 developers are watching eagerly. Soon we'll be able to route audio from an instrument app, directly into a DAW/recording app, or even throw an effect app in between. I'm personally really eager for the day I can run Moog's Animoog directly into Moog's Filtatron from the same iPad!

Here's a very brief demo of it actually working to send audio from an iPad app into a iPhone over WiFi.

For the many of you who email me with problems getting Virtual MIDI working, this is going to be vastly easier to get going. I've been spending a lot of time talking with Audanika's Sebastian Dittman, a company and man who know a thing or two about interface design. They have a clear vision for how apps and devices will connect to one another; in a single-unified interface. No more hunting all over trying to figure out each app's individual implementation panels, as we have to do with every instance of MIDI.

Review: Voice Synth (Universal)

When Qneo, not be confused with QuNeo, released Voice Synth back in January I had passed on it as an elaborate auto-tune toy. The recent update to 2.0 brought Pasteboard Audio importing and exporting, as well as MIDI-In, which caught my attention. Qneo graciously sent me a copy to play with, and as soon as I plugged my Rockband mic into my camera-connection kit I was glad they did! There is quite a lot to play with! The sound design options in here are not typical of synths, but they are many and interesting.

There are also a lot of entirely different ways to play with it. Aside from the auto-tune functionality, you can also record/import and sample, as well as loop and layer. All of these modes are different, but rely on the same sound design options. The center of the screen presents you with pitch and formant (vowel resonance) shifting, and differing tuning modes. Alongside is a mode selector. Live will immediately process anything you say, Repeat will wait until you have finished speaking before playing back, and Sampler will only tinker with a specific selected sample. On the other side is specific control for how you want to treat the sound: naturally, robotic, or a breathy whisper.

Things get really interesting with all of the additional knobs all over the screen. Unfortunately the knobs are radial, which seems awkward when most apps have trained us to use knobs vertically. You can use the knobs vertically, but you have to keep your finger on the far edge and even then your movement is restricted. If you can get past that, the knobs will do some wild shit to your sounds. The clipper is mean, the delay is deep and the chorus is rich. The reverb has an interesting slew function that makes things go bonkers, but everything has a dry/wet mixer knob to tone it down.

Voice Synth is really well designed, aside from the knob movement. When you get your head around it you can quickly morph your sounds in subtle or extreme ways. The actual getting your head around it part is made easy as they include a tutorial video in the app! That said, it really pays to have a strong understanding of sound design to get a meaningful experience out of it. It still feels more like a toy than a pro audio app, but it is a toy that pro audio app enthusiasts can enjoy! Below you'll find an embedded clip of me doing just that!
