Apple iPad Pro 2020

Apple have announced the new iPad Pro models for 2020, and they're good news for iPad Pro 2018 owners!

This is just an incremental update. The chipset is upgraded from the A12X to the A12Z, which might have some small impact on games with its increased GPU output. It is kind of amazing to see Apple reuse old chip architecture like this. Especially 2 year old chip architecture. The prices of the 11" and 12.9" are identical to the iPad Pro 2018 skews, though the starting storage is 128GB now. All units are expected to start shipping March 25th.

The only thing I care about here is the amazing dock with a trackpad that uses gestures! They're calling it the "Magic Keyboard" because they could name it Dog Shit™ and people would still happily pay $300 for the 11" model or $350 for the 12.9" version.

Expect iOS 13.4 to arrive on March 24th to add the trackpad support. Here is the flashy promo from Apple.

SOME people, Tim, some people. Sure as fuck not me. If I’m lucky, I’ll find a second hand first generation keyboard that isn’t in shit shape to replace my first gen Smart Keyboard that started losing letter print on month three... still kicking myself for not taking it to an Apple Store immediately.

At some point, they'll update the Macbook Pro to have a touch screen and detachable/retractable keyboard/trackpad. Then the following year they'll release PadBookPro with an OS called Everest, and it will be that point in the sky where iOS and Mac OS join. It will have all the sandbox-inconvenience of iOS along with all the maddening functional-entropy of Mac OS.
!*&@^#%! $300 keyboards? WTWTWTWTWTWTWTWTWTWTWTW That almost buys you a regular ipad. Man. They sure are milking them fools dry.

Back in the 90’s we had those solid IBM keyboards at work. They could stand any amount of abuse and you could spill your coffee on them and they continued working fine. Nowadays we get very expensive keyboards that the build and design quality is complete shit. Well done Apple.

This isn’t just an Apple issue. The more we shrink tech, then narrower the tolerances become and the easier it is to enter into a failure state. Or as Scotty said in Star Trek III: “The more they overtake the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain.” Apple just tends to be the most egregious because of their obsession with form over function since 2013... and their obscene prices, growing more obscene the further from reality they get in their privileged ivory tower echo-chambers.

I loved those keyboards. You can buy, or even custom build, mechanical keyboards like them. Since I spend so much of my day typing I invested in one and have loved it very much. I've had mine for several years now with no signs of wear.
I could afford a newer Ipad, but I use the last generation Ipad Pro with lightning because I love the logitech case with detachable keyboard so much. In their infinite wisdom, Apple moved the connection spot (I think) on the next generation and Logitech hasn’t made an equivalent case since. This case keeps the back protected and the glass cover is the keyboard which magnetically attaches. Back part of case supports landscape or portrait view (though keyboard only attaches in landscape). No need for bluetooth. I like it so much I bough my partner an older Ipad and this case as well. The case is now $83 on Amazon, but you need the 10.5” Ipad Pro (also version for 12.something Ipad).
