App Sales: Pandemic Panic

More freebies join the list today. I've also compiled a list of all the apps that are currently on sale. This list excludes apps that were previously on sale for cheaper recently. This exclusion is itself excluded in the case of Eventide apps, because they're giving away Rotary Mod. Void where prohibited, cancel anytime.

I've been baffled and saddened by a lot of the panic this pandemic has caused. Not only are local stores all out of toilet paper, some people decided to buy up all the paper towels. Now I'm stuck with those annoying select-a-size ones, when the only size paper towel I have ever wanted is the traditional size of a paper towel. You shouldn't even try to wipe your ass with paper towels, because that is definitely not going to flush right.

Meanwhile small businesses are freaking the fuck out, because they depend on daily foot traffic to keep the lights on. As a small business owner, I can relate to their plight. However some are actively and deliberately spreading bad advice to save their bottom line.

The picture to the right is an appalling example of this from Sunday, and the reason Governors are forced into closing restaurants and bars. This well crafted message begins with "chaos" and uncertainty, before then gently lead into, "I've always wanted Java Plus to be a safe place for many people... We have WIFI." This is insidious. I've never seen a more perfect example of cynical marketing. I know the owner is a devout Christian, so I hope for his sake that he's wrong about Hell existing.

He's not alone. As you see 56 people were Liking and Hearting this, and even helping him spread the message with shares, because they don't understand how epidemiology works. Vox did an excellent video explaining the layers of problems we're facing here. Watching this is a good use of 6 minutes from your time.

I really don't understand the toilet paper hoarding. If things go into severe lockdown it would likely be for 15 days, maybe 3 weeks. WTF are you going to do with 200 rolls of toilet paper in 2 - 3 weeks?!

I feel for small businesses, but they have the capital of their business and, presumably, could get loans in the future when a comprehensive stimulus package is passed. I really feel for the people working in those small businesses as they are completely screwed and probably don't have much in the way of a safety net.
Toilet paper hoarding: the thing is a lot of older people are to self isolate not for 15 days but for four months.
“Void where prohibited, cancel anytime.”? Sounds like a line from Negativland.

Also, if you're blowing your nose and want to flush your viruses down the toilet, you might want to use flushable TP rather than more expensive facial tissues. What are the implications of flushing your viruses down the toilet?

But it's not just older people buying it. In fact it's people of all ages hoarding it, which makes it harder for older people to find any....

And if you're isolated for 4 months, there's a whole lot of life-sustaining goods that you should be stocking up on, but TP is the only thing that's universally getting wiped out (excuse the pun).

But the symptoms of Covid 19 are a dry cough with little to no phlegm....

The point is, this is irrational panic buying. There are several videos showing a few people buying huge quantities. Big packages of TP are easy to see, so this activity makes other people nervous, so they pick up a few packages and within a few minutes the shelves are cleared out. This information gets distributed through social media and now everyone is worried that toilet paper is going to run out, so everyone starts buying.

Thanks, stub. I had that in the previous sales post, but forgot to include it here.

TP hoarding is an irrational act:

I’ve not been acting irrationally in all this, but everyone else’s fucking insanity has presented consequences for me. I can’t find toilet paper now that I’m getting close to needing it. I hate suffering for other people’s fucking stupidity.
