Doctor Who Theme on iVCS3, AudioKit Synth One, Moog Model D

YouTuber James Edward Cosby did a great recreation of the classic Doctor Who theme with apps!

As a life-long fan of the series I'm surprised by how controversial the latest Doctor has been. I think her Tom Baker impression is just fine. Perhaps we can all agree that this last season's take on the theme song has been one of the best since the show's regeneration.

Video Description:

I was recently asked how sound design and music recording has changed with the advent of the iPad and soft synths. So as I had already designed some "old school" Dr Who iVCS3 Bass presets and some sci-fi presets on Audiokit Synth 1 and Moog's Model D, I thought it would be good to show how the superb Delia Derbyshire Theme could be done today... so here's the basics ready for some effects to be added...

That was surprisingly satisfying to listen to. Very pleasing tones. Doesn't sound digital to me.

After 55 years on air they suddenly decide to turn the lead character from a man into a woman... the controversy doesn't surprise me.

I'm just waiting for a "Mr. Marple" or a "Miss Poirot" series to appear...

Jody Whittaker is an incredible actress and a great choice, I think.
I’ve been with Doctor Who since the classic series in my childhood. Jody Whittaker has been great, as far as I’m concerned. I got over that whole gender controversy fairly quickly.

What I care about is the show being better than it had been. I liked Peter Capaldi but I disliked the writing in the last several series. I care that the writing improves, the respect for science at least exists (“Kill the moon” was utterly enraging bullshit), the music stops being stupidly huge...

So far, the last series was a big improvement, as far as I’m concerned. I had complaints but not nearly as much as the last three series. I was never worried about Whittaker. I was worried about Chibnal. I hated his “Cyberwoman” Torchwood story. So far, that level of stupidity has not recurred and the quality of the storytelling has gone up. I’m happy with the show for the first time in years.

I also like the new theme. I was sick to death of Murray Gold’s over-the-top orchestral cliches.

Why does the new series continue to ignore the middle eight section of the theme????

As for this video... sorry, I don’t dig it. It’s so far off. I don’t care for the percussion either.

I'm not as much of a fan of Dr Who as I perhaps should be. My wife loves it, but as she admits, I always "walk into the room at the stupidest moments of each episode."

Nice to get the perspectives of a true fan.

Also, I completely agree that bad writing is insufferable.

Yeah, I loved Capaldi! He's now my 2nd favorite Doctor. But the writing was a disappointment for so much of his run that I fear he will not get the recognition he deserves.

I have some real gripes with the latest series:

- Season Finale "The Battle Of Ranskoor Av Kolos"... our heroes beat the all powerful and dangerous alien by Graham shooting him in the leg with a gun! Lame resolution.

- Christman Special "Resolution" - the mighty Dalek that can destroy the Earth and everyone on it is killed with a microwave oven. Lame resolution.

- " It Takes You Away." A blind girl is "tricked" that there is a monster in the woods by speakers playing monster approaching SFX. Come on guys... she's blind, not stupid.

- " The Witchfinders" - the might Morax are beaten by the King with a hand held torch setting fire to one of them. Lame resolution.

I could go on...

- the giant spiders in London (they kill the ones in the hotel but what about the rest of the city)

- the racist alien who wants to stop Rosa Parks who gets zapped into the past by Ryan (why didn't they just zap him earlier to get rid of him?)

- the idiotic spaceship eating gremlin. Great idea (indestructable alien who will slowly devour the spaceship they are on) but stupid realisation making the creature like a Gremlin on speed. And no verbal interaction with the alien (who could have poignantly poclaimed that he means no specific harm, he is just doing what he does, "the lion eats the antelope" etc..).

Too many weak ideas with huge plot holes or question marks hanging over them. And a clumsy, preachy PC tone over the whole series.

But, yeah, it is Doctor Who so I still watch it... ha!
