Hello, Fellow Kids 👋😜

As someone who likes to consider himself a writer, I've resisted using emojis. I try not to use them even informally on social media. I feel that, like the emoticons that came before emojis, they become a crutch.

Conveying nuance is hard, especially in written text. If you start to take shortcuts you'll have to rely on them. You cannot take shortcuts if you want to master any art form.

My thinking on this has changed recently after reading the 1985 sci-fi novel Eon, by Greg Bear. In it he describes a system of communication that includes both language and pictures. The "picts" he describes in the book sound exactly like emoji. They don't entirely replace verbal communication, but instead enhance it.

In order to maintain relevance, and reach younger generations as the site ages, it is important for me to communicate in the style of the times. To wit: 🍴💩🥑🍞

Special Credit this year to "Bob" who pranked me with an early morning email from Native Instruments:
We are proud to announce the beta testing will begin on Massive for ios. Would you be interested in a free copy in trade for a few demonstrations and maybe a few years of free ads on your site?? If this sounds great to you then shoot me a line and I will get you in touch with our legal team.
Hey Tim, what’s emoji for “Are you being sarcastic? I can’t tell.”?
LOL! I'm not sure. I've enjoyed trying to come up with ideographical meanings for things.

Like in the TTNM video with Jakob, I thought 🧠🤝 (Brain Handshake) was a good way of saying meeting.
“Eat shit, dick loaf”?

Dick Loaf? No, that would be 🍆🥖 ... 🥑🍞 literally means Avacado Toast, but a better translation in this context is: Eat Shit, Millennials.
Hehehehe... nice1 Tim ;)

I would’ve thought there would be an actual toast emoji. Thanks for correcting my emoji pictograph vocabulary, ha ha ha

As for millennials... I’m not one, yet I use emoji unironically. Emoji isn’t a millennial thing, unless that’s just another part of the age/coolness/kids joke :-) As a 43-year-old, there are some things in our culture that are new and freaky to me, but emoji isn’t one. I don’t use it pretty much anywhere other than chat, though. That’s part of why I’m kind of repulsed at how fucking many there are. Apparently we ARE headed for some kind of pictograph language hybrid in the future...

Assuming the first food group in your emoji message is Nutella?

Also Google "Bliss Symbols" to see what happened when Mr Bliss tried the same thing decades ago. Ended up suing everyone who tried to use them ... mainly schools for non-verbal children who found them very useful.

Aint life grand...

I just heard about that on Radio Lab! Wild story. There is the old phrase that the road to hell is paved with good intentions, but in this case the Crazy Train was railed with good intentions.
