haQ attaQ: NanoStudio 2 Obsidian │ Best Synth App of 2018

Jakob Haq, who is apparently known as Yolk of Hulk by Siri, produced another impressively informative docu-torial.

Jakob goes deep on NanoStudio 2's built-in synth, Obsidian, which he regards as the best synth app of 2018! The video also includes an interview with NanoStudio developer Matt Borstell!

Video Description:

The Obsidian synthesizer inside NanoStudio 2 by Blip Interactive for iPad packs an unprecedented amount of synthesis power! Obsidian might be one of the most intriguing synth apps that came out in 2018. The synth is so deep that even after investing three weeks of hard work into this video, I'm only able to show a part of it's full potential. Now this is haQ attaQ "docu-torial" and so not only does this video feature a tutorial, review and sound-demo segments, but also an exclusive interview with app developer Matt Borstell, the developer of NanoStudio 2.

Yeah it’s up there at the top for sure! Of all synths lately the synthmaster one is finding it’s way into most projects, it and sunrizer!

I was also going to mention synthmaster (2018), and Zeeon (2017) must also be mentioned.

Just listening to that quick feature list at the beginning though shows that Obsidian is indeed very impressive. I was pleasantly surprised to hear that you can map samples. I wonder if that includes velocity mapping. I caught a glimpse of what looks like a pretty full featured mod matrix.

Will definitely check out this video when I have some time.

haQ is often very enthusiastic, so I was kind of taking his hyperbolic language with a grain of salt.

Ok. I just watched the whole vid, and now I understand.

Holy moly, that's a cool synth. If I understand correctly, you only have one velocity layer for your sample keymap, but you can assign a velocity range to each of the three oscillators, so that gets you three velocity layers. That's pretty dang reasonable for a do-all synth.

There are so many power-user features built into this thing. The developer seems to have weighed things very carefully in his design.

My pet requests for musical boundary pushing would be to add quintuplets & septuplets to the quantize and grid lists, and add scala capability to the synth. No small ask, but that's my lil crusade.

I'm really impressed with NS2, and am grateful to haQ for this excellent video. GREAT JOB!!

I even tried to tone myself down a bit but this synth ... what can I say. It got me good! :)

Yeah, ask Siri about Jakob Haq (pronounced the way Jakob does) and see what she come up with! I got something about sushi once, and I just tried again and got, "Yucca Park." I was pleasantly surprised by Yolk of Hulk though. I could never have even come up with that if I tried, so I took a quick screenshot!
I love Obsidian synth so much. I was very impressed with the AU3 integration in Nano2 and was happily adding in all my AU synths into tracks, but this last few weeks I find myself using Obsidian for almost everything because it is so damned good!

Each patch can have 3 oscillators, each with 3 velocity layers, not to mention the possibilities of stacking patches and using keyboard splits.

Great video Jakob! No need to tone yourself down. Your enthusiasm is infectious and quite engaging and entertaining. You cracked me up when were seated and you turned to look at the camera with this expresion: 🤯 Well done!
