Seems like a competitor for AUM? Also seems unnecessarily difficult to set up. How is this an advantage to AUM?

I don’t think of this as a competitor. I’ll still use AUM as my main DAW, but I’m definitely going to incorporate ApeMatrix into my sound design process.

I don’t think it’s too difficult once you get your head around the routing matrix. Just follow one app from the left side to the right where it is has a connection, then follow it up to it’s destination app, then find that app on the left and follow it to its destination, etc until you get to the main output. I think it is much easier and way faster to route and reroute sound in different and interesting ways within ApeMatrix. A simple touch can stop or start the flow of one app to another in any order I want.
