Science: Powering Keyboards for iOS

With iOS's limited USB power, it can be a struggle to get your keyboard powered. Some arm-chair theorists speculate that one of the USB-Power-dongle-deals, the kind used for charging your phone in an emergency, would probably work. I've never heard of anyone actually trying it though.

Until now! Reader Maria D put theory into practice in a desperate attempt to lounge around with just her Oxygen 8 and an iPhone connected via iRig MIDI. As with any serious scientific en devour, she wisely documented her experiments.

I love her enthusiasm! I'm so glad someone finally tested this; it is great to see something like this works for iPhones or connecting bigger keyboards to the iPad! You should check out the rest of her videos. My favorite is Inside My Head; she's got huge stage pressence for such a tiny little thing!

Very cool, but is there any follow up as to how long it lasted?

Hi, thanks for the cool comments. Gatearray: I only had an opportunity to use my set up for an hour and a half today and when I shut it off it was still glowing green (meaning charged!) I'm excited because so far it's exceeded my expectations. I will not charge it so that I can total up how long the battery actually lasts. Hopefully, this week end I will have more time to experiment!

This is great, I've been searching for a similar solution for the last month. I was originally looking for a rechargeable battery that included a USB hub integrated, but the only one I found is not out yet, and they want like $300 for it. So my next thought was to do exactly what you have here, or use the battery pack to power a hub and not use a midi cable at all, but the cck. Anyways, great job, maybe a solar powered USB charger for the beach next!

Thanks for the response Maria! Do you have the model number of the particular USB charger you're using? Also, please keep us updated on the timing results if you can. :)

Thanks again!

Hi, Charger is called Duracell Powerhouse. I put the link under the comments in Youtube. It works on my end. But if not, if you put the name in amazon it should come up. Also, It has lasted an hour and a half and still going ...i actually had to stop lol...life gets in the way of fun sometimes!!! I will hopefully get another chance tonight and I will keep everyone posted. But I'm thrilled that the green light is still glowing after an hour and a half of solid playing!!!

Okay this now has exceeded my expectations. I used the charger for 1 and a half hours the first time. Then tonight without recharging it I used it for 3 hours straight and guess what? it's still 3/4 charged. The green light is only slightly diminished!! and my iphone died!! (and it was fully charged when I began!) so...keep posted folks cause this is SWEET!!
