Akai iMPC

Akai and Retroynms have released iMPC! Perhaps this means we are getting close to the release of the Akai MPC Fly!

iTunes Description:

Turn your iPad into an MPC. With more than 1,200 samples, 50 editable programs, 80 editable sequences, and iconic MPC workflow, iMPC is the first app to bring all the functionality of a classic Akai Pro MPC to your iPad. iMPC includes everything you need to create a beat quickly and easily, including built-in effects, plus the ability to create new sequences and record and overdub beats. Time correction from 1/8 note to 1/32T with variable swing, and Note Repeat from 1/8 note to 1/32T with latch control are also built in. The app’s built-in sampler can record samples three different ways: using the mic on the iPad, using the line input on the iPad, or using the multi-touch turntable interface in iMPC to record samples directly from iTunes or other music libraries.

This could be big! Native Instruments really dropped the ball with iMaschine, so this is a good chance to Akai to regain some ground.

As noted at the bottom there, if you purchase this it unlocks something inside of Tabletop 2.0, which allows you to use a copy of iMPC from right inside of Tabletop! Here's a demo from Retronym's John Paul, showing off the iMPC.

Tabletop 2.0 Update

Tabletop just received a major update, including a timeline editor and MIDI input! Thanks to Duke for the heads-up!

What's new in 2.0:

  • Timeline Editor. Edit, arrange, create notes on a pianoroll style timeline!
  • Midi Controller Support. Control Tabletop devices via Core Midi with hardware!
  • Tabletop Ready Apps. Standalone apps that work in Tabletop! iMPC is the first!
  • Share Sessions. Post and download sessions for remixing, backup and more.
  • Improved stability and performance.
  • Brand new UI look and feel.
  • Panhander. Autopanning effect device.

This is a pretty extensive update! The timeline editor alone address my biggest gripe with sequencing in Tabletop. The iMPC bit in there about it being an internal app is pretty interesting too. You have to buy the seperate iMPC app ($7), also just released, and then you can use it either standalone or from inside Tabletop.

Here is a demo video Retronyms released a couple of months ago showing off the new MIDI control options.

Different Drummer Demo Video

Different Drummer has had a short but dramatic life on iOS. First it was released at $300, simply to hold onto the name and discourage purchases until it was finished. Two weeks later it was re-released at $150 when the developer thought it was truly ready. I had contacted him to ask for a promo-code for review, but he said that he didn't think it was quite that ready.

Apps4iDevices bought it out-of-pocket and posted a little demo along with a write up about what it actually does!

From the article on Apps4iDevices:

It does have a big price tag for the app market, but after using it for a while I can tell you that it simply goes further than any other drum machine and gives results that I've never achieved before. I've used it for both drum patterns and synth parts, creating patterns that were beyond my expectations and imagination. This may seem too good to be true, but it's easier to appreciate when you understand the concept behind it. The real power of this machine is based on wave shaping using additive synthesis, combining the fundamental frequency with other partials to create a more complex wave shape. This wave shape is further manipulated by an additional set of rest, tie and dynamic waves.

Check out the full article for more details. This gives a much better idea of what this app is than the iTunes description about some "patent pending Cyclophone Technology" nonsense. I'm very interested in this after reading Apps4iDevices additive synth analogy.

Tutorial: Using Funkbox with Audiobus - Part 1

Funkbox developer Synthetic Bits has started a Funkbox with Audiobus tutorial series! This first video starts off with the basics, sending Funkbox into MultiTrack DAW for recording, and then throwing JamUp in the middle for some effects.

Look forward to the second part, which will be on MIDI Syncing tracks with Loopy. This will be very handy for making sure your Loopy loops are recorded as tight as possible!
