WOW Filterbox by Sugar Bytes

Sugar Bytes have released their 3rd iOS app, following the popular launches of Thesys and Turnado. WOW Filterbox is a dedicated filter app, featuring a variety of flavors, along with Audiobus (Input/Effect) and even JACK support! This is a direct port of WOW2, released on PC/Mac earlier this Summer.

WOW Filterbox iTunes Description:

WOW2 is here! With a future-dripping user interface, 21 incredible filter types with the famous vowel mode. With distortions that cover your tracks with gas and put them on fire. Modulations that cause more trouble than your modular dark room. And finally that warm and juicy sound, that you were looking for.

• 21 Filter types like Lowpass, Bandpass, Highpass, Bandreject, Comb and much more. Low pass types up to 48 db, including flavors like SVF, Diode Ladder and Transistor Ladder. The filters and distortions have been designed for best harmonics without aliasing, for high definition audio quality.

• Three different analog modeling overdrives and four digital distortion functions are included. Use them pre or post the filter.

• Modulation is power. Power is sex. Create stunning trance gates with the step sequencer, do some giant wobbles with the wobble generator or let all the modulators interact with each other. The LFO offers many different wave forms, restart options and sync flavors.

• Presets are just one click away. Randomize presets to inspire yourself.

Features:

  • XY-Pads to control 6 Parameters simultaneously
  • Integrated Player (iTunes File Sharing, Music Library, Factory Loops)
  • Integrated Recorder (div. Optionen: Start/Stop/Sync/Länge)

Synthandson thanks for sharing about this,i was hoping for the bass synth cyclop but if this is as good as their other apps i imagine its a must buy.

I'd love to hear some impressions on this. I only just recently started actually using Thesys for iPad even though I bought it a while ago, as the tiny interface kind of held me back from really warming up to it, but warmed up to it I have. Thesys is great, as is Turnado.

I cant find it in UK appstore or appzapp sadly,i will have to wait & i had a quick go with thesys on a friends ipad & like turnado full of options.

I have a hunch that any Sugar Bytes apps that make it to iOS will also make it into Auria, as the seem to have fully embraced the idea.

I asked them if their 'Guitarist' would ever make it to iOS, because, damn, it's impressive. When they finished laughing at me, they politely explained that it will take a quantum leap in iDevice power to ever host Guitarist. I think the snickering eventually stopped. The valuable lesson here is that there really are such things as stupid questions...

Instant buy. This is ANOTHER $99 vst/au perfectly ported to iOS. Simply unbelievable; Sugar_Bytes is frigging amazing.

Effectrix next?

:)

Wait, what? Today is a good day and SugarBytes seriously rocks!

@andre: do you mean you can't find WOW in your app store? If so, the following link worked for me:

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/wow-filterbox/id666864434?mt=8

I hope it wil work for you too.

Wow is good! Just had a little play and it's definitely not immediately presented itself as an 'apply any thing to anything' kinda app, but when the combinations work, they really do!

Only messed around with presets, ymmv! Some serious exploration to be done I think :)

Synthandson thanks ive got it now.

Love Sugarbytes- Turnado is one the best apps period, and bought WOW immediately. Already had one crash in less than a minute. Landscape only, no portrait, probably other bugs to be uncovered when I have more time to play with it.
But I still love Sugarbytes!

First impressions: sounds great. somewhat intuitive. runs like poo on my iPad2.
Hoping it can be "optimized" with time. Once it's up and running, it does pretty well though. That is, until you change presets or something. *boom* crash. Still, enjoying it once it works.

Seems like a cool app, can anyone who has purchased this tell me how the Moog effect/preset sounds? I'm one of those still hoping for Filtatron to be added to Audiobus. I have to say I like what I've heard, and I'm firmly convinced that Sugar Bytes should change their name to Buy Me Now.

Buzz: Runs like poo on iPad 2, do you mean that as in it's unstable and crash prone or that it's really CPU intensive causing stutters and all?

What iOS version are you on, and is your iPad 2 jail broken? Did you clear all the background apps and restart the iPad?

September 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterChrisG

Well, for science, I've just restarted the iPad, and closed all the background apps.

Launch went better this time (there is s small delay as the UI elements seem to initialize: sync graph is frozen..then moves, resonance animates, volume, etc.) Before the restart, this delay could be a couple of seconds, and create some sort of ripple effect as the UI constantly kept trying to update/keep up with current state of the internals.

To it's credit, the audio part never stuttered. it's just the UI gets hung up sometimes. if you wait, and it catches up, you'll be good. If not, it may freeze/crash. I can still make it crash if I pick a few random presets in quick succession.

iOS 6.1.3 (10B329). No jail break. Restart and clearing apps helped. Will test with Audiobus again, when I get some free time.

@Buzz

I'm seeing that exact same initialization slowness you describe on my iPad 3, as well. At this point, I'm chalking it up to v1 of the app but who knows.

September 19, 2013 | Unregistered Commentergatearray

Thank buzz,

I went ahead and bough. Also went ahead and updated my iPad 2 to iOS 7, although I said a hundred times I would wait. Anyway, with some crap in the background (browser etc) it did take a while for the app to start and then for the UI to initialize fully. So I closed all background apps, restarted the iPad and obviously it loaded up faster with the extra free memory, and I did not get that slow UI initializing either. I'm guessing it'll come back when I have more things going on, I only tried it outside of Audiobus with nothing else loaded so...

Really liking it, awesome gritty and juicy sound. But seriously Sugar Bytes, you need to work on your touch screen ports, slapping the double tap to zoom just doesn't work well at all. And things are tiny in this, like their other 2 apps. Hope all these ports bring in enough revenue so a re-design of all the apps will happen

September 19, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterChrisG

I think i just got a update for wow as it came up pressed it & it opened up wow instantly & now looks like its working properly on ipad 2 but they did not fix the crash when you press the random dice for the xy pad.Im so bloody glad i will be buying a new ipad in december if they are out as im fed up with the limitations & sound quality at times.

October 2, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterandre

@andre think Apple will have upgraded the iPads to A7 processors by then?

I realise I was completely wrong about waiting for the iPad update for a few weeks, still think it's worth waiting until they do though - the FPS discussion on the slow motion keyboard article shows that the claims about double the processing power are likely true!

October 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBaddcr

Is WoW a must purchase if u have Turnado? Explain the benefits of having it; what it can do that turnado can't? Thanks

October 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterG

The latest update eliminates the 'dice and 1,2,3,4' bug.

October 3, 2013 | Unregistered Commentersynthandson

@G some similarities, sure, but very different beasts!

The good:
The range of filters in WOW is impressive, the comb filter is bonkers, the distortion are good, the weird way they let you program the lFO is fascinating and an insight into how timing is everything ( I've probably spent a little bit too long watching it ).The vocalisation aspects are eerie at times, what you would expect at others. There's a ton of sonic mayhem and a lot of subtle effects to be had from it.

The bad:
The interface sucks mammoth balls on touch screen - just like Turnado :)

Overall app regret factor, 2/10 (10 being a complete waste of cash!)

October 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBaddcr

Baddcr on new ipads having the new processors i dont know & it would be typical for me to get the wrong ipad & wait 3 more months for right one but i heard a rumour from 1 person that apple are only going to make 1 a year for now on.If thats true i will have to buy the new one but if it means waiting 6 months i could do it unhappily.

October 3, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterandre

G

Besides more filter types and distortions, the effect algorithms are different. Turnado has to juggle a lot of different effects at the same time, and the quality of the effect algorithms isn't on par with a dedicated unit like wow. Also, all the modulation options are obviously tailored for Wow.

@andre, my friend is in the same position...

Frustrating not knowing hey... all I can say is I am still happy with the 4 so if it's making you that unhappy, just go for it! Looking at second hand prices of iPad 4 if you got it and decided to sell it on for the 5, you probably wouldn't lose that much, especially if you pick up a certified refurbished from Apple, they have 2 of the wifi model at the moment... :)

Thanks i see im £9 away from a 32gb ipad 4,i will see what happens in next 3 months & then make my mind up but that offer is very tempting

October 3, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterandre

Wait for the 5. You'll thank yourself a year from now when all those IAA synths and effects and DAWs are screaming for all the RAM and CPU they can get. iPad 4 is 1 GB RAM device, and iPad 5 will double that.
