Advanced Tutorial: PPG WaveGenerator

There were a lot of requests for a WaveGenerator tutorial, so instead of a review here is a tutorial!

The app is really way too complex to do in my typical style, so this is more like general advice and tips. I hope it helps!

Buy PPG WaveGenerator on iTunes: $19.99

[Tim Edit: Nope. Outright hate and bigotry just isn't going to fly here.]

Wow... That is just so many levels of not fucking cool, Cheez. Seriously, I'm stunned by this. I've never even had to consider moderating comments for their content before, but having that shit on my site is really turning my stomach. I've even let it slide when people use "gay" as a pejorative, and that really bothers me.

I've welcomed your personality, in all of its obscenity, because most of your posts are coherent and always lively. You went full on Mel Gibson, in reverse, here.

Addendum: I've removed the comment. Cheeze there is only 1 setting on the ban list. I can't just prohibit comments, it is a complete ban from access to the site. I've tested this. All you get at discchord.com is a white screen that says, "No access." You've been around since day one, please don't make me do that. Just keep it cool, or don't post comments.

Why is he talking about Thomas Dolby? Also, wavetables were introduced with Wolfgang in the PPG Wavecomputer, so, animoog used an existent technology created (or at least, pioneered) by Mr. Palm.

Tim, keep this link handy for the next time you need to babysit one of us :D

Ah, offset. Helpful tip. Thanks for dong this.
Too bad about mr. Dog. Hope he wasn't too offensive (although it sounds like he was)

Thanks for the tutorial Tim. It would seem you went through a similar process as I had, but, as usual I leaned something -).

Thanks, definitively learned a few things here. Btw there's a PDF manual up on Wolfgangs page http://wolfgangpalm.com/?page_id=584. Dunno if there's anything new/more in there then what's allready in the app..

Good work Tim. Your video inspired me to take time to learn this thing today. It works great with Genome over virtual MIDI and runs in the background too. Also ChrisG - thanks for link to the PDF manual :-)
ps the support and quick responses surrounding this app are fantastic.

Thanks, Chris! That's handy. I didn't think there was a manual, or at least the only results I got when searching for one was people complaining that there wasn't one!

I know lol. Probably made"em nuts so they put one together pretty fast. Also a new big update is going to be submitted early next week according to wolfgang, up to 10 min recording, audio copy/paste, iTunes files sharing, bunch of new presets etc. it's on their Facebook page in one of his responses.

Thanks Tim. Any tips on getting virtual midi working with this? My akai mpk works ok with PPG but I can't seem to get any apps to link with it via virtual midi.

Thanx for the tutorial Tim.

Does anyone know what that target thingy in the spectrum editor is?

September 8, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterZymos

Scott - try Genome. Works perfectly no setup required.

September 8, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTrueyorky

awesome vid, thanks! I was thinking, damn I'd love to see that hour long version you joked about :]. learned some cool tips!

September 8, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterRMG

ChrisG, Ty for the manual tip I hadn't found one when I searched either

September 8, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDuke

Thanks trueyorky - strange why genome works but no others do, still I'm sure it will come.

September 9, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterScott

Not only does virtual midi not work, but if I load say, Little MIDI Machine, then go into the settings in PPG to select the MIDI source, the whole app goes poof and dissapears...

September 9, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterZymos

I get that as well Zymos with pretty much every midi app I've tried, with the exception of genome

September 9, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterScott

Update submitted, that was fast!

Audio recorder with up to 10 minutes record time at 44.1 stereo
Audio copy to the Pasteboard
File sharing via iTunes
Keyboard octave shifting
More routing possibilities - enabling ringmod and more
Updated factory presets
Bug fixes

Thanks for the vid!

I've been having the same virtual MIDI problems too.

The "target thingy" is the spectrum balancer.

Oh, and I am in favor of an hour long tutorial as well!

September 9, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterthebananarepublican

I haven't gotten around to playing with Virtual MIDI yet. I'm glad to hear Genome is working though, that is my personal Go To for Virtual MIDI.

I'm glad to see thebananarepublican's name fit in the Recent Comments box. That is probably the longest (reasonable) name someone is likely to throw at it, so that's great news!

I don't know if I'd have the stamina to do an hour long video, though I have been toying with ideas on long-form stuff (in the distant future). I've noticed that my views fall off dramatically on any video longer than 10 minutes, so I think this is already taxing the attention span of YouTube!
