iOS 6 Makes Music Making Hard

If you haven't already upgraded you really want to avoid the iOS 6 update. There are many issues effecting musicians. I'll try to chronicle them here. Please comment with any you've experienced, including your hardware, and we'll get a big list together.

Rheyne tweeted recently about his Ad Hoc WiFi network completely dropping all of his devices right in the middle of this week's jam. I've heard this from several people now, with WiFi just dropping on them. Unfortunately Apple will not let you downgrade iOS firmware versions, so he's stuck with this hanging over his head the next time he gets set up.

Additionally some apps have just stopped working! Mark Mosher posted recently that PPG WaveGenerator and SynthStation just crap out at the loading screen. Wolfgang Palm was contacted and is addressing the issue for WaveGenerator. No one cared enough to contact Akai.

Regular contributor pantsofdeath wrote in with his own woes with Stochastik drum machine. He loves this app, but it just will not load correctly for him now that he's upgraded.

I'm personally disappointed to find Amen Break Generator isn't running on my iPhone 5, but I don't know if that is an iPhone 5 or an iOS 6 issue. If you're a developer trying to figure out if your app is going to run on the new Xcode, on the new iOS and on the new hardware I've got you covered with my professional beta testing services!

PPG and Synthstation both seem to work fine on my iPad 3 running iOS 6.

"no one cared enough to contact Akai" LOL!

Yep, WaveGen runs fine on my iOS 6 iPad 3, as well, DC.

I have to say, though, iOS 6 has been available to devs for several months now, so it's public release a week ago shouldn't have been too big a surprise for anyone, yes?

PPG, Synthstation and Stochastic run fine on my iPad 3 with IOS6. In fact, Synthstation seems to run better now. Before IOS6 it frequently shut down on launch if I had other synths open. That doesn't seem to happen now. There is a confirmed problem with csGrain and IOS6 - it exits on launch. The developer told me an update is coming. I don't know if it's an IOS6 problem, but bs16i sends an ungodly shrieking noise to Auria if it's open at the same time. This does not happen with any other music app I've tried. Caveat: I'm not a hardcore user, just like to mess around with this stuff.

Any apps not working following the iOS 6 update? I'm holding off on this one as there isn't too much tempting me to upgrade right now.

My stochastik opens, but there are no fader bars in the instruments of song settings, meaning I can't change volume or tempo...

add Loopseque to the iphone4s/itouch4g ios6 crash on load (wifi off or on) list. Waviary crashes too, but not immediately. no others of note.

PPG runs on my iPad2 under iOS 6, but only if I don't have SoundPrism Pro running at the same time. If SP Pro is running, PPG launches, then closes immediately.

I have used many synth and sequencer apps on my iPad 2, ios 6 with no issues. However with ios 6 on my iPhone 4, Garage Band seems lagier (is that a word) than shit.

After how many months is it safe to update? Until now, only 10 apps did have an iOS 6 update for me.
Should I wait for iOS 6.1?

No probs running synthstation ipad2 ios6

CsGrain is fucked. TC-11 has interface problems with its new update. Grain Science now pans samples hard right except for the effects busses.

Amen Break Gen works fine for me on iPhone 4s with iOS 6. Have held off upgrading to iOS 6 on my iPad 2 where I have many more music apps, just to give devs time to address any problems they missed before launch. I expect any problems with major synth apps like Wave Gen will be worked out soon so using them with iOS 6 will not be an issue. Report on flaky network behavior is concerning, though.

Both ppg and synthstation are running fine here - iPad 3 and iOS 6.
Actually all my apps are ok, not sure we're you get your info from...
Btw; wifi works as expected as well.

Has anyone with problems tried doing a restore via iTunes? It seems odd that some are having problems, others not. Pleased now that my iPad 1 won't run iOS6!
