DO NOT UPDATE ANIMOOG!

A new update for Animoog is on iTunes, but you don't want it! There is a serious bug in the 1.1.0 update that will cause it to crash! Over and over again; splash screen then a crash. It may be related to In-App Purchases, so if you don't have any you may be safe.

If you have already updated you can delete Animoog and re-install it. However, you will not be able to restore purchases or make new ones. Thanks to Angel, and Steve for helping me test this fix, over Twitter!

I'm sure Moog will get a new update out ASAP, but in the meantime you're shit out of luck. Fortunately there is no shortage of new apps you can be playing with!

Update: ChrisG and Alex report that the iPhone version is not effected. From ChrisG's comments here I think we can rule out In-App Purchases being the cause of the iPad problems. It seems to be effecting people who haven't made any!

Update 2: Restore purchases and new purchases are working again. There is no official word yet from Moog. If you have a lot of presets that haven't been backed up, you might want to wait until Moog releases a new update, instead of reinstalling.

It crashes on my iPad 2 latest iOS but not on my 3GS latest iOS if that helps anyone...

Yup crashes on my ipad1 ios5.1.1
Yes in app purchases, no jailbreak.

I do have a few custom presets I made plus the free ones from sineaudio on the iPad version. The iPhone version doesn't have any. Maybe there's a problem when it tries to sort out non-factory presets. Anyway I hope Moog is on top of this.

apparently reinstalling will work. But i have to back up my presets first.

August 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymouse

According to the Moog forum, a user reported a reinstall solved the crash. The video for the update has also been pulled from YouTube.
No word on how much the MIDI IAP is, anyone here know? It's a must buy for me, but was just curious. I hope it's transefrable, as I've got five iOS devices, and it could get expensive!

A reinstall works, but you will lose all your presets if you don't have a backup of them. Thankfully I did. The MIDI Out add-on is $4.99 for those that are curious

@DJ K:
Thanks mate. Strange it's an IAP, but at least it's not too expensive. Any idea if it's transferable to more than one device?
I know you can't transfer the sound packs between iPad and iPhone, but am hoping it's not the case with this.

August 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBlebhead

so if i didn't backup my presets before the update, i've lost them? anyone know a way around this? i'm guessing i'm screwed they way animoog handles the presets.

I think i just lost about a hundred hours of work building presets i loved. i didn't know backing up was this important until now. i am as green as animoog right now.

You can probably use iExplorer to grab your presets from the file system (no jail breaking required). Or just wait for Moog to update it.

August 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterChrisG

my presets were gone. but i guess it was my fault for not hitting the "export presets" button recently. Now i know. I'm going to wear that part of my screen down.

Just finished redownloading and syncing all my downloaded preset packs as my punishment.
i will have to live with the loss of my beloved user presets. At least i have some of them in recorded wav files.
What started as excitement for the update turned into panic very quickly. not a fun update.

I am interested in the midi out despite it being a cheap skate developer iap! Anyone tried it? Is it worth it? Or the other sound presets for that matter? I have e Devine presets and they are cool.

August 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterInvisiblesupermonkey

invisible,

you can get 29 free presets from sunsine audio, and about 40? from the detroit techno dj set on the moog site (also free).

I haven't tried the 2 new packs yet but they sound good from the descriptions.

August 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymouse

Thank you will check that out

August 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterInvisiblesupermonkey

Wait, 5 measily bucks for big new feature and you're calling *them* cheap skates? You were kidding and I'm just missing it, right?

What functionality does the midi out in-app-purchase add? I normally drive Animoog from another app, and the MIDI in is working fine.

WIth MIDI out, I'd guess you could send the keyboard note presses, and the various knob twiddles as MIDI out -- is that what the $5 is for?

August 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterFessaboy

Yes, that's exactly what the new MIDI out IAP is.

It looks cool, because it not only sends the keyboard MIDI out, but also every knob send MIDI as well as the X/Y controller. A really great feature if you're working with a DAW on your computer, and $5 is reasonable in my opinion after most of us got this $30 app for 99 cents. :)

August 10, 2012 | Unregistered Commentergatearray

And if I had bought it for .99 cents a further 5 bucks don't seem so bad (bit of a steal). Having paid full price 5 bucks is a little annoying. For an app which while brilliant in what it does it has limitations and also naffs up when updated (or at least last 2 times).

Opinions are much like having a hole in your ass. We all have one I guess.

i-Funbox,
i am just finding out is awesome for file management of your ios device. Drag and drop files back and forth, rename presets in animoog, CREATE, rename, category folders, move presets, etc.

It's free.

blebhead said that you can't transfer sounds between iPad and iPhone versions -- can someone confirm this to be the case? I have Animoog on both platforms and it's kind of a pain to have to buy the sounds for both platforms: it effectively doubles the cost of the soundpacks. :-(

Pretty sure you just called me an asshole. I'm ok with that. People complaining about app prices gets my Irish up.

And to ratchet myself down a notch, 30+5 is indeed different than 1+5 and I'd probably be annoyed as well. That said, $35 is still nothing for what we get. Short of going the nlog route (discontinue the old and buy anew if you want new features), iap remains the only way a developer can continue to make money for something we're all expecting they'll continue to work on. That in contrast to someone selling you a pair of shoes where they make it, sell it, and never worry about it again. With desktop software, we're used to paying semi regular (often crazy high) upgrade fees but a weird standard is coming into play with the appstore where we're all expecting perpetual updates for free.

August 13, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterWill

I don't think he meant to call you an asshole, Will. That's just a semi-common phrase that opinions are like assholes and everyone has one.

Also Matt, Blebhead was correct. Purchases in the Animoog IAP store do not transfer to the iPhone version of the app, so if you use both you'll have to buy them twice. I've tried to talk to Moog about this, several times, but have gotten no response.

August 13, 2012 | Registered CommenterTim Webb

Perhaps I shoulda used a smiley with 'you called me an asshole'. That was the intention anyway.

August 13, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterWill

You know what? I love Animoog. This synthesizer alone would be well over a grand in physical form, and many of you got it for under a buck. Are you really going to bitch about $5.00? You'll pay more than that at McDonald's. Moog is an excellent company and I think they are worth supporting.
