Vote for your favorite Scary Sound!
Monday, October 29, 2012 at 2:26PM 10 folks participated in the first Preset Design Contest! Which is honestly 7 more than I dared to hope for. In fact there were several people who included lots of presets, but to keep things simple I had to ask them to choose only one for the contest.
Here are the 10 presets for your consideration! Please vote by hitting the "Like" button in the top right of the player, when it is playing the one that you want to vote for. You can vote for as many of them as you like, but only the 3 with the most votes will win!
Update: Voting is now closed! Thank you very much to all participants and voters for making this first contest such a success!
Voting ends October 31st, whenever I wake up enough to tally the votes. I'll also post a Magellan preset bank full of the contest entries, plus some bonus patches, for everyone to download!
Fletcher Kaufman, from Sunsine Audio, is directly in the path of Hurricane Sandy. He let me know he was notified today by his power company to expect power loss of up to a week! He wanted me to assure you he will get the prizes out as soon as he is able.

Cool. Mine has another sound layered on it though. That pulsing 16th note thing isn't a part of the preset. Sound like maybe it was layered with ong creep or draken by mistake?
Thanks for the cool work Tim, good job everyone and damn soundcloud for ruining the sound of this great synth lol . At the moment I am listening through my headphones and all the presets sound like mono, not to mention mine, that I can recognize first hand obviously, is missing at least half the frequencies compared to the real thing, as I suppose happen with all the other participants, but that's what you get for being cheap. Lol
Looking forward for the full bank to taste first hand.
Cheers. :)
Hehe, i can agree with the two guys above me. But hey, it was fun to build the preset and the other sounds cool too! :D
I was actually playing with my own preset when I noticed I still had Synth Couping turned on... I came here to:
a) check if that was on when I did the recordings
b) check if anyone noticed...
In looking at this, and the way I recorded, about half the presets have Ong Creep (which was a dual-synth preset) stuck in there!
This is a mess, I'm so sorry guys. I'll see if I can fix it while preserving the votes.
[Update: No I can't preserve the votes. There is some weird chacheing going on SoundCloud's site with Playlists. I've got to make a whole new playlist because it won't show the corrected recordings in embeds.]
I was kind of wondering, because many had a similar "flavor." One of them has a really wicked low frequency thing going on; me likey. The contest was a great idea.
Oh man, there are some cool noises coming outta my speakers right now. Y'all all did awesome, and I definitely gotta give props to Tim for making my own "Dead Man's Keys" sound better than it probably is. I really am digging on the idea of running a regular competition for this sorta thing; it's a great way to motivate me into different realms than the normal "wubbified" lines and sharp metallic leads. Maybe the competitions could later on evolve to include things outside of presets as well -- say, everyone tackle the same loop and make something unique out of it (glitch, MOOGify, etc.), or even to create entire songs out of a shared concept.
Whatever happens, count me in.
Oh yeah, and good luck to the Sunsine crew during the hurricane. Stay safe y'all!
*starts pondering what a hurricane would sound like, by way of Magellan*
lollerskates, I love how mine hardly even registers on my laptop speakers. :) I was hoping it would actually shake my laptop! Headphones bass lovers, HEADPHONES.
cXeGG, I love dead man's keys. I aim to use it the second the pack is released. Voted for it.
Gees, I had like 3 sure winners and forgot to submit them. Well, I had some I liked and forgot. I guess that's what too many mind altering substances will do to you........fuck me!!! Anyway, thanks for the contest Tim , I thought it was a cool idea and I hope you repeat some similar ideas. Perhaps I will remember to make submissions in the future. -)
Good luck Fletcher and everyone in the NE. Make sounds!
Really enjoyed this as well and for me its definitely not for the prizes but the motivation a simple competition can create, to have me sit and have some fun twisting those nipples err... I mean knobs, publicly. I would participated anyway even if the prize was Tim's nose picking artifacts, although at the end I will kindly refused to receipt them. lol
Thanks for the props, Will! Much appreciated, and I hope you have fun with it once Dead Man's Keys is released into the wild. Personally, I think I'm going to turn it toward a Disney Haunted Mansion remix (since that's what I was mentally humming while making the patch).
I wonder, by the way, if it might be possible to arrange a charity competition or community-made preset pack to benefit the hurricane Sandy recovery - 'specially with the awesome Sunsine crew stuck over there as well. I'd certainly be happy to whip up a couple of patches for such a thing. Any thoughts, y'all?
