Yamaha Visual Performer

In a first for Yamaha, they've released an app that looks pretty damn cool! Visual Performer is a MIDI-aware visualization app.

iTunes Description:

Yamaha's Visual Performer is a App for iPad/iPhone/iPod touch which you can express your playing in graphical animation.

• Graphic animation appears synchronized with the playing by the MIDI instrument (WiFi or a cable is required)
• 10 types of graphic animations and the projected image by iOS device's camera
• Customize your original animation by combining with two patterns
• Change the animation pattern during your play by using chain function
• Record your sound and the animation on your iPhone/iPad. *Video format: mov.
• Play with your iPhone/iPad (XY Pad or Virtual keyboard)
• Synchronize with musical playing application on the other iOS device (WiFi is required)

The app is free, but there is a $3 IAP called Special Package. It looks like this could be handy for livening up some of the boring videos I see on YouTube of people just pressing Play in Garageband. Thanks to reader Rafael for pointing this out!

Yamaha has an annoying habit of breaking up their apps by region and language. The one on iTunes Spain is also in English, and it isn't even available in Yamaha's home country of Japan! If you can't use this first link, the second one seems to be a generic European version, but it is also only localized in English. Amusingly iTunes Canada also points to this European version.

That looks wicked! How is it that this isn't a VST I have right now already on my PC?

The special package is about 2/3 of the possible effects, it even has some sounds built in, quite a fun little app :)

Hey, I downloaded and although I think it's really cool, it keeps crashing. It allows you to record the video and it saves it to the camera roll (this is when it crashes) but then there is no audio. Obviously that can't happen until audio bus comes out. SOOOO I hope they will enable that feature because then you could upload right to Youtube! Right now you just have a silent video. I guess you could record the audio from another app and then export the whole thing and import into a video program but that's extra work!!
I hope they fix the crashing problem too. Otherwise it's certainly a really cool app!

Hey, this may be elementary things, but can we get a tutorial with detailed instructions on connecting midi apps/hardware? I want to run this with my Synthstation 25 and Midibridge. I know there's a way, just can't seem to wrap my head around it. I also have Animoog, Sunrizer, Magellan, and Alchemy. As I understand it I should be able to midi control my iPad wirelessly with my iPhone. I guess an iOS Midi for Dummies lol. Any help and pointers would be appreciated.

Multiple MIDI connections tend to get pretty far out of the "For Dummies" territory in a hurry, but this does give me a good idea for an article! Thanks!

Cool Tim. Would be very helpful. Is Audiobus here yet? Lol :)
